VIPER - Economical Energy is harnessing underground gravity energy storage solutions (UGES) in novel ways (2:18)

An energy storage technology represents a reinvention of pumped hydro, using a similar approach to UGES, VIPER switches out the water used by pumped hydro with sand or metal pellets. VIPER also removes pumped hydro’s requirements for mountains and construction in ecologically diverse areas, by using deep holes in the ground like those provided by underground mines.

UGES harnesses excess grid energy to elevate materials like sand in decommissioned mines, storing it as gravitational potential energy. This innovative system releases stored energy by lowering material turning gears connected to a turbine to generate electricity. The Energy Vault Resilience Centre utilises a crane to lift and stack massive concrete or composite blocks, storing energy in the elevation gain. When energy is needed, the blocks are lowered, and the kinetic energy from the descent is converted back into electricity.

A gravity battery system that uses a fluid with 2.5x the density of water, meaning that they can be installed on small hills instead of mountains. The system can also utilise mine slurry as a source of renewable energy.

Energy is stored by pumping water out from beneath the piston, raising it to a higher position. To release energy, water is allowed back in, pushing the piston down and driving turbines to generate electricity.
